"The Ed Tull Pool; I think that is the public library on top of the hill"
I remember sliding down that hill on cardboard boxes in the fall after frost killed the kudzu. Of course that was before they built Ed Tull Pool. The city began the fund raising when I was in Miss Rodgers third grade at LJ Bell.

Ed Tull Pool it was located just off of Highway 74

Might as well provide the answer now....since everyone has pretty much identified the Ed Tull Pool. This one was pretty easy and loved all the replies. Stay tuned for more to come.

"@ Donna Tuthill, I believe the name of the Dancing place was "The Hut". It was a Quonsett (?) hut, rounded on the top. I used to go to Summer Camp here as a little boy. We'd do crafts in an old house that was on stilts in the back of the property, ride horses and swim. I loved that place!!!!"
It was known as the “Tin Can”

"Ed Tull Memorial Pool. Mrs. Martha Holt ran the pool. Took senior lifesaving classes there. You could get to the pool by coming down the steep hill and little narrow path made in the kudzu behind the Richmond County Library. There were a lot of snakes in that kudzu, too. When we were young, that hill was at least three times as steep as it is now. There was also a little side street that ran beside the library and behind the Gulf station that faced 74 By-Pass. You could also enter from 74 By-Pass. There was a Putt Putt Golf Course on the right as you entered. I used to manage the Putt Putt the summer it was first built. I remember Jerry Turner playing in a band for a dance inside the pool on a warm Saturday summer night in 1964. I'm with Joel. I would have loved to seen Jerry ride his bicycle up that hill. The band would set up on the concrete roof to the pool pumphouse. There were sheds over to the right and back of the pool where the teenagers would gather and dance and have parties. All the boys and there girls would lay on beach towels and sun in the grassy area that was in forground of the diving board. As Tommy stated, there was a high dive to the left of the low dive pictured above. This picture was taken after it had been taken down. If I remember correctly, it was taken down because someone fell from it and was hurt badly or died from a fall. Spent many fun filled hours in that chlorine filled pool."

"Gayle, you didn't know about the snakes? Big-long scary snakes. I remember Mrs. Holt killing a water moccasin once with a rake and bring it down the hill to put in trash can outside the pool entrance. Also, do you remember the concession stand. When you bought a drink or other treats, you ate them on picnic tables that were inside a little fenced-in area in front of the concession stand. We were not allowed inside the pool area with drinks and food. As you were coming out of those cold showers, the kiddy pool was to the right."

Only way 2 flunk swimming was 2 drown. This country boy swam in the Ussery boys' pond with cousins Pistol (Robert Lee), Joe, Ed (Kicks), Mike (Munk), Jimmy (Bishop) & Henry (Bo) & my brothers Ken (Slick) & Gary (Slim). Pete didn't have time 2 swim w/kids. He had his driver's license & was chasing women. Bathing suit was not needed. 1st time skinny-dippers watched from the H2O while Ussery boys lol as little sister Nancy ran back 2 house with visitor's shorts & underwear n hand. What's a boy 2 do? U can't chase a girl neckked even if she was only 5 yrs. old. I put on bathing suit when I went to community pier @ Ledbetter Lake. Never had nerve 2 leap off Ledbetter Bridge even though I watched everybody do it. I had seen the bottom 2 many times when lake was lowered. Much less chance of being gored by a stump when jumping off the high board @ Ed Tull."

I always thought it was the YMCA pool.. Use to walk down there and spend all day. Alternating between playing tennis and swimming, diving contests, getting to close to some girl in the pool. Then the dances at the Tin Can.. Black Lights and Jimi Hendrix.
