"I am not a R'ham native, but I am pretty sure it is R'ham Hardware beside Farmer's Bank. It was across the street from my husband's first Nationwide Ins. office which was rented from Doc & Pauline Williams in 1962. Our office was beside their Chiropractic Office..Pennigar Motors Buick-Pontiac dealership was right down the block across from where current R'ham Hardware is now....yes there was a Ford dealership also down there. We bought a brand new 1967 Pontiac Executive Station Wagon from Mr. Pennigar. It is to this day at the top of my list of our favorite cars from the past."
"Hardware was between Bank and Cox Army Supply."
"R'Ham had 3 hardware stores..Happy Covington worked at hardware on Lawrence St behind old Bristow Drug. It was where Richmond Sav. & Loan was & Community Bank is now. Hardware was across the street from parking lot behind our office on corner of E. Wash. & S. Lawrence. We moved to that office in 1972 from the
front office of the old Manufactor's Building owned by Kay Whittemore."
"my hubby and I think it was Lupton's Hardware on S. Lawerence. That is definitely where Happy Covington worked....went in there many times from back of office. Happy had a head full of knowledge about plants, fertilizers, etc."

Plenty of good answers and guesses. The correct answer is below:
ReplyDeleteThe photograph below is the previous location of Rockingham Hardware Co. in the early 1960s - prior to urban renewal. The building partly visible on the right is a portion of the current RBC Centura bank building on the corner of W. Washington Street and Lee Street.
Phillip Knight; This is Rockingham Hardware as I worked there my Sr. year and after graduation,We sold everything but the kitchen sink. I have oiled the floors more times than I want to remember. Hough Hardware was located where thelaw offices of Leath,Buynam,Neal and whoever. Lupton Hardware was next to "The Building an Loan"(Richmond Savings and Loan)
